One of the most common parts to fail on a steam shower, shower cabin or steam shower bath, is the thermostatic cartridge. It is particularly found on older and new model showers. But it is an important component within a mixer shower. These are often made up of brass or nylon materials. It is available in a variety of forms, sizes, colours, and designs. It can compensate for changes in the temperature and/or pressure of the incoming water supply in order to keep the blended temperature at a set point. It adjusts the temperature of the water and serves as the mixer shower's main apparatus!

Common Symptoms to diagnose a fault

Some showers have a cartridge that comes in a few parts to make up a whole cartridge. You may not need to repair every component in showers that work this manner, depending on the fault you're having.Common faults that indicate that the thermostatic cartridge has either failed or is failing such as:

  • No flow at all from the shower,
  • Low water flow,
  • completely cold-water flow,
  • Water temperature fluctuating hot and cold,
  • Only lukewarm water,
  • unable to control the temperature, so you're only getting cold or warm water
  • Water spilling from the shower's bottom
  • only cold water coming through the head, and a slew of other issues
  • When attempting to adjust the temperature, the knob becomes stiff.

What went wrong with the thermostatic cartridge?

There are several reasons why the Aqualisa Quartz cartridge may have failed.

  • The prime reason is an in-balance water pressure between the cold and hot water. It is very common. The cartridge, which is housed within the valve, will be damaged as a result of the constant in-balance between the two. It can be fixed by putting in a PEV (Pressure Equalizing Valve). It is important to note that it will not fix a cartridge that has already failed.
  • Another issue could be muck in the system; perhaps the flux to joint pipes which are not washed out. Dirt or debris can damage thermostatic cartridges because of their delicate nature.
  • Another reason for the cartridge's failure is strong limescale build-up. So if you live in a hard water area, it certainly pays to install a softener, these are not always expensive as people think,
